I Love You in Morse Code
Eight letters, four dots and dashes each on average — and a reliable way to say it that nobody expects.
How to say I love you in Morse code
Write each word as its letters in Morse, separate letters with one space, and separate words with a slash. That is the whole rule — the same one used for any sentence.
| Letter | Morse code | Shape |
|---|---|---|
| I | .. | |
| L | .-.. | |
| O | --- | |
| V | ...- | |
| E | . | |
| Y | -.-- | |
| O | --- | |

Shorter versions of I love you

A texting habit, not a Morse standard — but readable.
Morse code necklaces, bracelets and tattoos
Most Morse jewelry fails for one reason: no letter separation. Beads of alternating length encode dots and dashes fine, but if the gaps between letters are the same as the gaps inside a letter, the whole piece reads as one long code — and “I love you” becomes an eight-letter blur.
Practical fix: put a spacer bead between letters, or make the letter gap at least twice the intra-letter gap. Keep the word gap visibly larger again if you use more than one word. And go short — LOVE reads far better at small scale than I LOVE YOU.
For tattoos the same logic applies, plus one more: pick a typeface where dot and dash are visually distinct at 3 mm. A dash that just looks like a slightly longer dot will be misread for the life of the tattoo. Crochet follows the same rule: two stitch heights for dot and dash, and clearly wider chains between letters.

I love you in Morse: FAQ
What is I love you in Morse code?+
.. / .-.. --- ...- . / -.-- --- ..- — that is I (..), LOVE (.-.. --- ...- .) and YOU (-.-- --- ..-), with a slash between the words.
How do you write LOVE in Morse code?+
L is .-.., O is ---, V is ...-, E is a single dot. So LOVE is .-.. --- ...- . .
Is there a shortcut like ILY?+
ILY is a texting abbreviation, not a Morse one. In Morse you can shorten it to just LOVE (.-.. --- ...- .) or a single V (...-) if you want something compact for jewellery (jewelry).
What if the dots and dashes run together on a necklace?+
That is the main design risk. Keep a clear visual gap between letters — a small spacer bead or a gap of at least one dot-width — or the piece reads as one long code. For jewelry, fewer letters is usually better: LOVE is far more legible than I LOVE YOU.
How do you say I love you with light or sound?+
Flash a short pulse for each dot, a pulse three times longer for each dash, and pause between letters. It works with a phone torch, a bike light, a knock on a door, or a tap on a shoulder.
